Austenland (2013): A Quick Review

One reviewer says Austenland is “a romantic comedy for Jane Austen fans only.”

Rotten Tomatoes says, “… it succumbs to outworn romcom clichés and slapstick gags.”

Forget that.

First of all… it doesn’t “succumb” to anything. It purposefully pokes fun at itself- romcoms, Austen fans, Darcy lovers, “fangirling” – all of it, like ALL the time! Did we see the same movie?

Enter writer/director Jerusha Hess. You may remember her from such films as Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. Really? They didn’t think that her sense of humor would shine through on this film too?

I think this movie can be enjoyed by anyone. But, oh wait… it is a truth universally acknowledged in the film world that a movie written, directed, and produced by women with a female protagonist must only be enjoyed by a female audience.

Well, that’s bollocks!

The plain and simple truth of it is that I laughed so hard I cried. I actually thought I might have to remove myself from the theater. I enjoyed it immensely. All the actors: Keri Russell, Jennifer Coolidge, J.J.Field, Bret McKenzie, Georgia King, James Callis, Jane Seymour, Ricky Whittle- were perfect. This film is a lot of ridiculous fun and if you want to enjoy it I suggest you crack open an Austen novel and don’t take yourself, or the movie, too seriously.
